History
Studies looking at India’s building construction concluded that related codes and bylaws lacked uniformity nationwide and often were not performance oriented. This realization resulted in the National Building Code of 1970, creating India’s first unified set of building regulations. Since then, India’s building codes have been revised and updated. India has invested in energy efficiency, creating the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) in 2002, and the Energy Conservation Building Code (ECBC) in 2007. In 2008, ClimateWorks’ Regional Climate Foundation for India, the Shakti Sustainable Energy Foundation, was created in response to build a sustainable and secure energy future for India.
