WASHINGTON, DC, May 17, 2016 — The Building Codes Assistance Project (BCAP), the trusted, non-partisan U.S. leader for energy codes advocacy, research, analysis, and training, has won a cooperative award from the U.S. Department of Energy SunShot Initiative.
In partnership with the Center for Sustainable Energy (CSE), BCAP will develop solar-related educational materials and provide targeted training to design professionals, including architects and engineers, in 22 key metropolitan areas across the nation. The nearly $800,000 award spans two years and is designed to give these professionals the tools they need to incorporate solar into their blueprints and designs. When design professionals and engineers better understand how solar impacts their day-to-day work, they can support solar growth and eliminate barriers to widespread acceptance.
The training will address topics such as basic technical information on solar photovoltaics (PV), policy and community benefits of enhanced PV deployment, the state of the market for PV, and the role of various market players in advancing PV deployment.
“Design professionals play a crucial role in solar deployment since they are in the unique position of educating building owners, appraisers, and code officials as part of every project,” said architect Maureen Guttman, President of the Building Codes Assistance Project. “The education toolkit and training that we develop with this award will equip design professionals to effectively incorporate solar into every aspect of building design, while at the same time, reducing current and future costs for building owners.”
Jessyca Henderson, Managing Director for Institute Policy and Strategy at the American Institute of Architects (AIA), stated that AIA is greatly pleased to support this training program. “The target results of this proposal represent important and timely goals for our members and are well aligned with our organization’s objectives. AIA will support the work of the BCAP team in connecting with our state and local components to market the program to our members.”
