Overview The ICC 500 is a standard developed by the International Code Council (ICC) for the design and construction of storm shelters. It provides minimum requirements to safeguard the public health, safety, and general welfare through structural strength, means of egress facilities, stability, sanitation, and other performance criteria.
The 2020 Ohio Storm Shelter Code is based on ICC 500-2014 with Ohio-specific amendments. This code sets the minimum standards for the design, construction, and maintenance of storm shelters in the state of Ohio, ensuring that these structures can provide protection during extreme weather events such as tornadoes and hurricanes. The Ohio-specific amendments include additional provisions tailored to the unique weather patterns and needs of the state.
