Scope
- The provisions of the Georgia Existing Elevator and Escalator Code 2017 apply to the maintenance, modernization, and retrofitting of elevators, escalators, and related systems in existing buildings. This code ensures that older equipment is upgraded to meet current safety standards, covering areas such as emergency communication systems, accessibility improvements, fire protection, and operational safety.
Exception #1: Elevators and escalators located in historically significant buildings may have more flexible upgrade requirements to preserve the building’s historical character, as determined by local jurisdictions.
Exception #2: Private residential elevators may be subject to fewer modernization requirements unless specified by local building codes.
