Scope

  • The provisions of the Georgia Existing Elevator and Escalator Code apply to the maintenance, modernization, and retrofitting of existing elevators, escalators, and related systems in commercial and residential buildings. This code sets safety standards for older equipment, addressing operational safety, emergency communications, accessibility, and fire protection.

Exception #1: Elevators and escalators in historic buildings may follow alternative compliance pathways to maintain architectural integrity while ensuring safety upgrades are implemented.

Exception #2: Private residential elevators in homes may have reduced requirements for modernization, subject to local jurisdiction regulations.
